Oranienbaum – Palace, Park and Sights

Oranienbaum Palace, the palace park and the town layout form a coherent ensemble. Anyone looking for sights in Oranienbaum will therefore find more than a single palace: it is precisely the relationships between architecture, garden spaces and town that make the place interesting.

Understanding palace, park and landscape

Oranienbaum Palace and the town layout

The Dutch heritage of Henriette Catharina shaped the palace complex. Along with the palace, a formally planned town and a garden were also created. For a photographic approach, it is worthwhile combining the overall view with closer views of the façades. This makes it possible to show the relationship between the representative building and the surrounding space.

Palace park and Chinese Garden

The Anglo-Chinese Garden sets its own accents within the grounds. The pagoda, the Chinese House and water here belong to a shared design context. They should be explained together on this page before individual motifs are explored in more depth. A sequence of images could first show the garden space and then turn to architecture and reflections.

Orangery and garden culture

The orangery is part of the history of citrus plant cultivation in Oranienbaum. It continues to be used for overwintering potted plants. An exterior view of the long building and a complementary photograph of the plants would show different sides of this context. Seasonal use and current accessibility should be checked separately before a visit.

The photographic view of the place

For the planned series of images, an orienting overall view and closer shots are meant to come together. What matters is not the number of images, but what each one contributes to understanding the place. What lines run through the image? Where do built form and vegetation meet? What changes between a wide view and a detail? The photographer’s personal observations complement the selected images.
